NDLTD: The Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) is an international organization dedicated to promoting the adoption, creation, use, dissemination and preservation of electronic analogues to traditional paper-based theses and dissertations.

This engine is from Digital Equipment Corporation and it is not associated with AltaVista Technology of California, a developer of web authoring software.

Ask Jeeves
Ask Jeeves for Kids
Students enter a natural language question and receive a selection of options which they can then pursue to find their answer.
This Southam Inc. search engine covers the web but flags any Canadian resources that are found.
Google's promotional materials claim success in finding high quality sites easily, eliminating much of the chaff found by typical search engines, linking the searcher directly to the appropriate page within the found site, and other techniques which allow users to find the results they want quickly.

Subject Directories
AltaVista Subject Search
AltaVista enables clients to search the web using their search engine (above) or this directory structure. The Education section has 12 main sections, each of which breaks down into numerous subdirectories. Note that their directories and subdirectories are presented in an horizontal organization which might be disconcerting at first but is good for showing your path through the directory and the various relationships within them.
Argus Clearinghouse
Collections of recommended sites are categorized within subject-specific guides.
Beaucoup is a directory of about 600 different search engines, organized under such headings as general, meta-search, what's new, media, geographically specific, software, language/literature, and many more. If you're looking for a search engine for a particular task, you'll probably find it here.
Direct Search
A metalist of links to hundreds of "search interfaces of resources that are not easily searchable from general search tools such as Alta Vista, Hotbot, and Infoseek."
Education World
An educational database with links to over 100,000 sites. This link is to their hierarchy but a search engine is also available.

WWW Virtual Library
The WWW Virtual Library consists of over 50 independent subject guides to Internet resources. Each subject directory focuses on a particular topic, and is developed and maintained by people who have expertise in that field.
